The captain of the Titanic, Captain Edward Smith, had only one last task to complete before his sailing career would come to an end. He only had to take people from Southampton to New York safely, but his final route was a huge disaster. As a matter of fact, he actually went to bed the night of the 14th and ignored all 7 ice warnings received from other ships around about ice fields ahead. If he had acknowledged the warnings, he could have stopped for the night and avoided the iceberg the Titanic had struck. Plus, to get a record breaking sailing time from Southampton to New York, the captain choose an alternate route and went south for an extra twenty minutes, which takes them on a direct path straight into an iceberg. If he had just kept on the path of his original route, the ship could have avoided an iceberg collision. Was it Captain Smith's fault the Titanic is no longer above water?
